Each evening and morning the colors are lowered or raised. This picture is the evening color ceremony aboard the Chesapeake

Chow

Chow

Our meals were eaten on the "lighthouse" ship Chesapeake. Lighthouse ships were stationed off the coast in within bays or rivers to assist shipping. Compared to the sub there was a lot of room!

Morse Code

Morse Code

COB taught the boys about the use of Morse Code vital to maintain silence and exchange messages. It took a long time to pass each teams 2 word message!

COB earned his pay on this exercise.

Aft Torpedo Room

Forward Engine Room

Forward Engine Room

2 of the 4 diesel engines on the sub. This room could get up to 130 degrees when cruising in the South Pacific. Each engine room team would spend no more than 2 hours before being relieved.

Sleeping Quarters

Sleeping Quarters

Bunk Room where there were either 3 or 4 bunks in a position. This picture shows one position with 3 bunks. Even that was snug.

Watch List

Watch List

COB (Chief of the Boat) with the parents working on the watch list. The assignment sheet listed a parent and cub to do a 1 hour rotation between 11 pm and 6 am to make sure if something happened everyone could be alerted.

Exit Hatch

Exit Hatch

Cubs and Parents had a chance to exit the sub via the Mess exit hatch to see Baltimore Harbor at night. The cub in blue is standing on the floor of the Mess about 15 feet, whereas the cub in red is about half up the exit hatch.
